If you’re concerned that you may have a lump in your breast, it’s time to look at more advanced methods of breast cancer screening than a self breast exam. The most common option given out by doctors is a mammogram. Unfortunately, mammograms have been proven to be unsafe. Similarly, related options such as ultrasound scans, magnetic resonance imaging, and PET scans are either inordinately expensive, or prone to failure (i.e. misdiagnosis or failure to diagnose at all.)

Common wisdom is for a woman over forty get a mammogram at least every two years, if not every year. No scientific study has proven that mammograms actually save lives, and in fact mammography has established health risks attached to it.

Each mammogram generally takes four shots of each breast, generating about 1 rad of exposure to X-rays. That’s almost a thousand times greater than the exposure from a single chest X-ray. A single rad might not sound like that much, but consider that X-rays have been proven to be powerful mutagens, destabilizing your DNA at the genomic level — a trait shared by the most aggressive cancers. That kind of danger is not something you want to expose yourself to with any regularity.

Avoiding mammograms thus simply makes sense for your long-term health. In addition, mammograms have a high percentage of false positives, which can lead to emotional stress and financial trouble. What’s worse, there have been hundreds of cases of unnecessary mastectomies and chemotherapies reported across the United States.

Fortunately for everyone, there is an alternative breast cancer screening method that is completely safe, rarely results in a false positive, and costs less.

When your body malfunctions, including by forming a cancerous growth, there are several predictable biological tools it employs to help maintain its health. It’s only after these processes fail to achieve their goals that we develop detectable symptoms and realize that we need to see a health professional. Today, a tool has come into being that can detect subtle changes in your body temperature that indicate the early natural processes are underway. By tracking those temperature differences, it’s much easier to spot problems before they generate symptoms — saving you a lot of heartache.

It’s called thermography, or thermal imaging. By detecting potential problem areas when preventative medicine is still enough to ward off the problem, thermography can save hundreds of thousands of dollars in health care costs.

Specific to breast cancer, thermographic imaging is an easy tool to use, as the breasts are largely symmetrical. The imager can then use one breast as a ‘map’ to the other breast and highlight areas that are dangerously different between the breasts — signs that something significant is developing on one side. The process is non-invasive, painless, and risk-free.

Only by continuously seeking out alternative detection and treatment methods can we make informed choices that are most appropriate for our lives. It’s true for treatment, prevention, and detection of diseases of all kinds. For breast cancer screening, thermal imaging is the best we have today.
